The Global Humanitarian Technology Conference (GHTC) was first held by IEEE in 2011 at Seattle. GHTC 2011 was a unique event with over 250 participants from 17 countries and a technical program with complete with keynote and invited talks, discussion sessions, numerous presentations, tutorials, exhibits and posters.

While the response to the Call for Papers at GHTC 2011 from South Asia was particularly gratifying, the number of presentations was somewhat lower than the short-listed papers. One of the main reasons identified was that it was expensive and time-consuming for authors from South Asia to travel all the way to Seattle.

Considering the potential for Humanitarian work in South Asia–which is home over a fifth of the world’s population–IEEE GHTC organizers and participants decided to have a GHTC Satellite Conference focusing on issues in South Asia. The first of the GHTC-SAS is scheduled for 26-27 Sept 2014¬†at Uday Samudra Leisure Beach Hotel & Spa, Kovalam, Trivandrum, and is hosted by IEEE Kerala Section.
