Kerala Section

IEEE Kerala Section, with close over 4,000 IEEE members, is one of the most active Sections in R10 as well as globally in IEEE. Apart from the regular IEEE professional activities, Kerala Section is well-known for the vibrancy of its IEEE communities such as GOLD, Students, WIE and Humanitarian Activties. Kerala Section was noted for its several humanitarian projects starting from the response to the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.

It is noteworthy that Dr. Peter Staecker inaugurated the IEEE Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology (SIGHT) at Trivandrum, Kerala, in December 2012. Further, the Chair of IEEE Ad-Hoc Committee on Humanitarian Technologies, Mr. Amarnath Raja, as well as the SIGHT Steering Committee, Mr. Satish Babu, are both members of IEEE Kerala Section.

Kerala Section also convened the IEEE-R10-GOLD International Conference with the theme “Humanitarian Technology Challenges of the 21st Century” during 20-21 February 2010, resulting in a Conference Declaration which outlined the contours of Humanitarian Engineering for the first time in an IEEE context (document available here).
